DAYS' Eric Martsolf says a motherlode of drama is headed Brady's way

Martsolf previews that Brady's about to get the rug pulled out from under him, and oh baby (scandal), is it gonna be a screaming good time.

It's been a whirlwind past couple of years for Days of our Lives' Brady, who's experienced a slew of tumultuous relationships and a downward spiral into the depressing world of drug addiction. And though he's finally seeing the light at the end of the dark tunnel, having kicked his drug habit and entered into a sweet relationship with Melanie, it's only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down around him. But what exactly can fans expect when the Kristen/Theresa baby scandal comes to light? Soap Central caught up with Brady's portrayer, Eric Martsolf, to find out.

Though it's obvious that the relationship between Brady and Melanie (Molly Burnett) will most likely be short-lived, considering both of his exes -- Theresa (Jen Lilley) and Kristen (Eileen Davidson) -- will soon be torpedoing into his world in an unexpected way, Martsolf says the characters' connection has been necessary for his alter ego. "Addicts, when they do find happiness that comes into their world, they embrace it, and they don't take it for granted, because most of their days are dark and hard," he explains. "Just getting up in the morning is tough and a struggle, so when that glimpse of sunlight comes into their world, I think that's important to express that. It's huge. And he's been dealt such an awful deck of cards in the love department -- lost fiancées, he's been manipulated, and pure love has been missing from this guy's life for so long."

In fact, the last time he can recall Brady being in a solid, mostly-healthy relationship is when he was with Chloe. "I was just greeting Nadia [Bjorlin] and saying hello, and we had a short conversation about how the Brady and Chloe years were pretty pure, as far as their connection and their connective tissue as a couple," he shares. "It's funny how it's been for Brady lately, with Kristen, losing Madison [Sarah Brown] in the explosion; losing Arianna [Lindsay Hartley], who was hit by a car; Nicole [Arianne Zucker] left him outright for E.J. [James Scott]. I mean, throw him a bone now!"

Fortunately, though Martsolf enjoys the happier times his alter ego experiences, he says the darker stuff is the most interesting for him to play. "Without a doubt, [it was the most fun] when his addictive personality came to town," the actor shares. "When it blew up... I didn't see it coming. I took on the role of Brady, believing that he was generally similar to [my previous character] Ethan Winthrop on Passions: a nice guy, always doing the right thing, wanted a family and children and to take bubble baths with [his] soap opera wife and eat chocolate strawberries, everything would be great. And much to my surprise, this character just took a very, very dark turn."

He continues, "I'm sure I'm not the first guy to say it, but having dark turns is always a dream for actors. But it took me by complete surprise that he went down such a dark path so quickly, and I really embraced it and loved [it], because I had played a Dudley Do-Right character for so many years on NBC, and to be given this completely different set of circumstances was lovely. I ran with it."

Of course, the reveal that Kristen stole Theresa's embryo just might cause Brady to run, as well -- straight back to drugs. And whether or not that exact scenario will play out, Martsolf does admit that his character's future with Melanie looks grim. "Circumstances are going to dictate the longevity of their relationship, that's for sure," he previews. "But hey, it's not always quantity. Sometimes it's quality, and if Brady can have 10 minutes of happiness with a girl who wants nothing from him other than his love, then he's going to roll with that for as long as he can. It's cute... but obviously, this genre was not built on happiness 100 percent of the time. Who wants to watch that? We love success stories, and in order to have success stories, you have to have a drop-off point. Remember the magnitude of the Brady/Kristen wedding and the video? There's that level of fun coming up [with the baby reveal]. There's a return to that level of fun."
